The restoration and redevelopment of De Vijf Koppen in Maastricht is complete! It is a unique project where cultural history, landscape, and ecology converge, making five centuries of fortification history visible and tangible once again.link

Following the collapse of a section of the historic city wall in 2019, an opportunity arose not only to repair the monument but also to reinforce the original relationship between the roundel, the city wall, and the historic earthen rampart.

Commissioned by the Municipality of Maastricht, MTD Landscape Architects and HVN Architects developed an integrated restoration and design plan. By restoring the earthen rampart to the level of the 16th-century wall walk, the historic defensive structure has once again become clearly recognizable. A walking route along the city wall connects the monumental elements and offers striking views of the City Park, the Jeker River, and the historic city center.

Through the use of contemporary Corten steel additions, wildflower-rich grasslands, and natural, reed-lined banks, a careful balance has been struck between cultural history, landscape quality, and ecology.

De Vijf Koppen has thus gained new significance as a special location within Maastricht’s City Park, where history and contemporary use come together.
