The renovated Raadhuisplein in Huissen is now open! This marks a significant step in transforming this historic site in Huissen’s town center into a greener, more attractive, and climate-resilient public space.

Where parking once dominated the visual landscape, space has been created for a park-like setting featuring trees, colorful plantings, and pleasant areas for people to gather and relax. The square now serves as a green link connecting the 'Achter de Gracht' parking area, the new 'Hof van Huesse', and Langestraat, which leads into the town center.

The design by MTD Landscape Architects seamlessly integrates quality public space, greenery, and climate adaptation. A water retention system beneath the square collects rainwater from the surface and surrounding roofs, temporarily storing it before allowing it to infiltrate the ground gradually. During dry spells, this stored water benefits the trees, plants, and soil.

At the same time, Raadhuisplein continues to accommodate activities and events; for instance, the placement of the trees was carefully planned to allow for the traditional 'King Shooting' contest. New furnishings, lighting, and a green walking route further enhance the connection between the square and the rest of the town center. In addition to Raadhuisplein itself, the final design encompasses the adjacent public space surrounding the 'Hof van Huesse'.

Following the official opening, the planting of greenery has also begun, giving the new urban park the look and feel we originally envisioned.

We look back on this collaboration with great pleasure and are proud of the result!
