With the unveiling of the construction sign and a symbolic first dig into the ground by aldermen Jonathan Felix and Dirk Franssen, the redevelopment of Wilhelminaplein in Roermond officially got underway this week. Contractor Theunissen has been commissioned to carry out the work, which is expected to be completed by April 2027. It marks a significant milestone, bringing the designs by MTD Landscape Architects to life.

Commissioned by the Municipality of Roermond, the firm developed a design plan for the square that enhances its cultural-historical significance—specifically its role as part of the former fortifications and as an entrance to the historic city center via the Venlosepoort (Venlo Gate). A key objective of the plan is to improve the square’s appeal as a place to spend time, while also boosting its greenery and climate-adaptive qualities. All of this is to be achieved while retaining approximately half of the existing parking spaces.

The plan introduces elements that evoke the city wall, the historic tower, and the former dry moat. Integrated into this are a new urban walking route and a small public square. Once implemented, this redesign will make the historical significance of Wilhelminaplein tangible once again, transforming it into a future-proof component of the public realm in Roermond’s city center.

The design plan for the square was developed in consultation with an engaged group of residents, business owners, and stakeholders, all of whom provided significant input.

We look forward to seeing the final realization of this remarkable project!
