This opinion piece centres on the question of which areas offer the greatest potential for public-space investments to improve the living and residential quality for local communities. The area surrounding the Wilhelminakanaal — with Hofmannlaan on the northern bank and the historic Loswal Lijnsheike on the southern side — is a particularly strong example of a location with high potential for enhancing quality of life and place.
Since 2022, MTD Landscape Architects has been involved in developing a vision and masterplan for the Wilhelminakanaal. The Waterlijn Tilburg project illustrates how integrated area development — focusing on connections, nodes, programming, ecology, climate adaptation, and cultural heritage — can converge into a future-proof public realm, with the canal serving as a spatial and social identity carrier throughout the city. In doing so, the area can evolve into a unique place to live, work, and recreate in Tilburg.
We thank the GroenLinks–PvdA party groups of North Brabant and Tilburg for their interest in this development vision and for the valuable discussions during the visit.
