In 1993, MTD Landscape Architects was commissioned by the municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch to work on the reconstruction of the Zuiderpark. This ten-year collaboration resulted in a major transformation and substantial improvement of the park. One of the most significant interventions during this period was the restoration of the city walls. This included relocating the tennis courts, optimizing routes and connections, and constructing the Sint Jans parking garage. By introducing this parking garage, the area’s former parking lot was removed, and the historical city canal was reintroduced. This water feature also incorporates ecological qualities.
The connection between the park and the southern part of ’s-Hertogenbosch was strengthened. The play meadow, the central heart of the park, was raised and equipped with a drainage system, significantly enhancing its usability. The walnut trees planted along the circular path have flourished over the years, and the poplar circle still serves its purpose.
The sports facilities, including the tennis complex and rugby fields, are actively used and provide significant social value to the surrounding neighborhoods. The petting zoo is another cherished spot for residents of all ages.
The Zuiderpark has become a place where nature, recreation, and history converge. It is now a valuable component of the green-blue network of ’s-Hertogenbosch.
