Innovation in TU/e Tile Leads to 6,609 Kilograms of CO2 Reduction

Over the past year, significant progress has been made in the realization of the grounds surrounding the new student housing at the Blauwe Loper on the TU/e campus. In addition to physical sustainability measures such as the planting of native trees and vegetation, disconnecting rainwater drainage, and creating water storage innovative work has been done during the execution phase to make the paving materials more sustainable.

Years ago, MTD, in collaboration with Schellevis, developed a concrete TU/e tile with the right aesthetic qualities. This TU/e tile has been integrated across the entire campus as the standard paving material. For this new design area, we naturally adhered to this choice, but with a focus on enhancing the sustainability of the TU/e tile.

After extensive research, it was found that two sustainable improvements could be made. In parts of the plan area that are not subjected to heavy traffic loads, the tile was produced with 50% recycled aggregate, and 20% of the cement was replaced by a CO2-neutral filler.

The cement reduction in this sustainable Schellevis tile results in a CO2 reduction of 6,609 kilograms for this project, equivalent to the amount of CO2 that 275 trees (half a hectare) can absorb in a year.
