Past and Future in Harmony

MTD Landscape Architects was selected in 2022 to create a new design for the Grotestraat in Almelo, a shopping street that is being transformed into a mixed-use neighborhood with both residential and commercial facilities. This transformation is linked to the necessary sewer system renovation. In addition to separating the sewer system, the redesign focuses on a less urban, more livable environment, incorporating current themes such as climate adaptation and biodiversity.

Ruud Dubbeld of MTD has been responsible for the design process, from the initial sketch to the final design, including the associated participation process. For the implementation phase, Erik van den Akker collaborates with representatives from the Municipality of Almelo, Strukton, and Unihorn in a construction team. MTD is currently providing aesthetic supervision during construction to ensure the original vision is realized and leads to a high-quality result.
The new street profile reveals historical elements of the old street and sidewalks. By using baked bricks, recycled paving stones, and natural stone, the plan is both circular and sustainable. Existing street lighting and reusable street furniture are also integrated into the design.

Greening plays a central role in the plan, with the planting of various trees, shrubs, and perennials, supported by solid underground infrastructure. Existing façade gardens are preserved and expanded where possible.
A water feature is added in the square, where children can play. This water element reflects the history of the Grotestraat, with references to the city gates, Grote Kerk, buildings, and alleyways from 1817. Together with the tree benches, this spot invites visitors to rest and cool off. Additionally, archaeological finds were made during excavation, which will be shared later.

Strukton began construction last summer and expects to complete the Grotestraat North project in the spring of 2025.
