Who is Joof Tummers, and what is your background in landscape architecture?
I am a passionate landscape architect, trained at Wageningen University, and I first experienced the profession during my internship at Buys & Van der Vliet. After graduating, I gained a broad orientation on the field by contributing to ‘The New Map of the Netherlands’ and working at H+N+S Landscape Architects, where I learned about agenda setting and policy development.
When Buys & Van der Vliet transitioned into the new firm MTD Landscape Architects, I spent over a decade enthusiastically working on remarkable projects, from the Amsterdam Forest and various national parks to designing street furniture for highways, urban regeneration projects, and the Noorderdierenpark Zoo.
In 2010, I transitioned to the engineering and consultancy firm Movares, where I immersed myself in mobility challenges and complex infrastructure projects. There, I evolved into a leader of diverse multidisciplinary teams, including process managers, policy strategists, advisors, (technical) designers, structural engineers, cost experts, and contract lawyers. While the organizational aspects of my work grew increasingly prominent, I never lost my persistent drive to seize every opportunity to make the world a little more beautiful.
What inspired your return to MTD Landscape Architects?
Old love never dies. Over a year ago, I attended the 25th-anniversary celebration of MTD Landscape Architects, and the spark was reignited. The love for craftsmanship and the pursuit of timeless quality in shaping our outdoor spaces is something truly special. At MTD, much of what is conceived is actually realized, and being part of this creative environment brings me closer to my passion. With the extensive experience I’ve gained externally, I believe I can make a distinctive contribution to the future of the firm. I’m thrilled to be back and look forward to developing the firm further alongside the team.
What are your plans for MTD Landscape Architects?
As General Director, my goal is to empower a new generation to shape the future of the firm and, by extension, the future of the Netherlands. Everything at MTD revolves around the power of design, the craftsmanship of the landscape architect, and the pride in flawless technical execution that ensures designs become reality.
MTD operates with an exceptional standard in the creation process, driving the evolution of the profession—from enabling construction projects to revitalizing heritage, and from implementing concrete climate measures to creating timeless outdoor spaces. The firm is a hub for nurturing talent. Just as MTD shaped my professional journey, I hope it will remain a breeding ground for dedicated professionals who, in collaboration with our clients, strive to bring out the best in every challenge.
