This project, a collaboration with the municipality of Venlo and ProRail, aims to realize a safe and efficient connection between the city center and Venlo-Zuid. The design places a strong emphasis on green areas and liveability. For example, the underpass is positioned as a 'green link' that connects the Jammerdal with the city and that contributes to both ecological and recreational values. By cleverly folding the landscape, the infrastructure is integrated and space is created for water storage. The released green zones are being developed as new public spaces, for both people and nature. MTD landscape architects has a design role in the construction team of the Municipality of Venlo and Contractor Dura Vermeer, in which the draft design drawn up by Heusschen Copier has been further elaborated.
Important elements in the design include the activity square on the Kaldenkerkerweg with a 'balcony' overlooking the railway and the city. In addition, on the east side of the railway there is a place to stay at the Willem van Bommel street with play facilities, which promote social interaction and recreation. Both places were designed with input from local residents and stakeholders, which has led to a design that fits in well with the wishes and needs of the community. On the west side, the focus has been on preserving the existing green-blue structures on the west side of the Guliksebaan and good connections to the bicycle structure. The underpass itself is incorporated here with earth walls with trees and flower-rich grassland and depressions that serve as a functional wadi and that enhance the natural and green image.
