Westermarkt Tilburg – transforming a 1960s Shopping Centre into a Green and Future-Proof Urban Heart

In close collaboration with Diederendirrix Architects, MTD Landscape Architects is working on the transformation of Westermarkt from an outdated shopping centre into a vibrant, sustainable and green urban centre for Tilburg-West.

Originally developed in the 1960s, Westermarkt has served as the commercial and social heart of Tilburg-West for decades. However, the area has become increasingly outdated and no longer meets the spatial quality ambitions that the city of Tilburg pursues today. While Westermarkt continues to play an important role in everyday life, its spatial coherence and quality of public space have gradually diminished over time.

The redevelopment will create a contemporary, lively and green mixed-use centre comprising approximately 800 homes, 10,000 m² of commercial and community facilities, and an underground parking garage. This transformation offers a unique opportunity to redefine Westermarkt as an attractive, cohesive and future-oriented centre for residents, visitors and local businesses alike.

MTD Landscape Architects has carried out an extensive exploration of the landscape framework and public realm transformation. Green infrastructure, active mobility routes, high-quality public spaces and climate adaptation strategies form the foundation of a robust and integrated urban framework, connecting Westermarkt to Westerpark and the surrounding residential neighbourhoods.

The design focuses on a fine-grained network of routes and public spaces where pedestrians and cyclists take centre stage. By relocating the majority of parking underground, valuable space is freed up above ground to create a greener, more comfortable and climate-resilient public realm focused on social interaction and everyday use.

The development of Westermarkt is currently progressing through various design studies and spatial scenarios, which are being further refined in close collaboration with stakeholders and project partners.
