The transformation of the former sanatorium de Klokkenberg into an open residential community took place on behalf of Schonk, Schul & Compagnie and based on a design by MTD landscape architects and Rienks architects.
In 2022, MTD landscape architects was asked to draw up a design for a private garden on the Klokkenberg. The client's ambition was to use the garden design to maximise the coherence with the total complex and the adjacent landscape of the Mark. At the same time, the focus was on an optimal green experience, both from the house and from the terrace.
From the high terrace, which offers a view of the garden and the adjacent stream valley landscape, a gradual transition has been created from the more cultivated garden to the natural landscape of the Mark. The garden and the adjacent landscape can be accessed from the terrace in two ways; via the monumental, curved natural stone staircase and via a steel staircase in the axis of the pond. A gate in the hedge provides direct access to the adjacent landscape. The garden is largely semi-paved and has a shaded terrace at the back of the garden, designed with Schellevis strips. This offers a cool, sheltered spot from which you can look back at the entire Klokkenberg complex. The pruned beech hedges visually anchor the garden with the rest of the complex.
The pond, which is in line with a prominent window section of the apartment, strengthens the relationship between inside and outside, emphasises the length of the garden and guarantees an open view of the stream valley. The raised edge of the pond also functions as a seating edge, while a playful water feature at the end of the pond contributes to a pleasant atmosphere and a cooling stay on the terrace at the back of the garden.
The planting, consisting of perennials, multi-stemmed trees and sculpted hedges, forms a natural transition to the stream valley landscape. The choice of planting is aimed at a rich seasonal experience. Species such as Zeeland button, pimpernel, autumn anemone, Chinese diamond, meadow crown and mountain leek, together with multi-stemmed varnish trees and alders, provide a colourful image that brings every season to life.
Every season has something special to offer in this private garden on the edge of the Markdal.
